QUOTING HIRST
Audio, 2min, Loop

For the "Rundgang" 2009 at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig I attached a piece of audio work in the lift of the acadamy. The following quote of the artist Damien Hirst could be heard as an infinite loop: "I just wanted to find out where the boundaries were. I‘ve found out there aren‘t any. I wanted to be stopped but no one will stop me." This quote, with which Hirst refers to his controversial animals, that are soaked in formaldehyde, was extended by his piece of work "Diamond skull" with a frightening level of perception. Hirsts world of cynicism and the closely connected perversity of the high level art market, which is happy to play Hirsts game and doesn’t stop him, can neither be reality nor future for the main part of today’s artists. The artistic round tour at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig was an adequate occasion for the piece of work. A constantly changing ambient music track accompanied the quote in a meditative and lulling way as if the person in the lift was advised to purchase the latest bargains. Still the quote revealed an artistic self-perception that doesn’t lack conviction and changed the interior of the lift into a coaching station for the exhibitor and the visitor of the artistic round tour ("I can buy/sell whatever I want"). And whoever does a secret fart in the crowded lift hasn’t by far crossed the "boundaries of good taste" yet.
